Spotting for 12 days!!

Ever since this month started, I started bleeding; it was more like spotting and that continued for 12 days straight!. Today I woke up with mayor cramps and it's much heavier like it's my actual period day. My question is, is it possible to be spotting for 12 days and then get your period. Btw this has never happened to me.
