does birth control ((the pill)) make you gain weight?

I'm going to be going on birth control soon (the pill), and I've been told that it makes you gain weight. is this true? it so, is there any way to prevent it? I'm already slightly overweight and I really don't want to gain any more weight.

The only birth control proven to make you gain weight is the depo shot. Other forms can cause water retention or cause an increase of appetite causing weight gain but if maintain your diet you wont gain weight from the pill

None of my friends nor I have gained weight while on the pill. However, I've heard stories about weight gain in relation to other birth control options, i.e. the shot.
