Do newborns lose the hair they were born with?

My son was born with such beautiful, thick hair! He's always getting compliments. But my MIL said enjoy it while it lasts because it all falls out. Is that true? He's 3 weeks and no sign of hair loss yet.

Bonus question: if he does will it grow back the same? His hair's straight but he's mixed (black and white) so I'm curious what it will look like.

Not always, but many do... this was my daughter at birth, and then at 6 months with completely new hair!

Yes it happened with my son but he didn't lose it all it just got thin but he's 5 months and it getting thick again.

My son was born with thick black hair, his all thinned and fell out around 3/4 months and now at 15 months he's got super thick super blonde hair lol

My second daughter was born with beautiful thickish very dark hair and was like that until around 4 months, she's nearly 2 and has very blonde curly hair, so it doesn't always grow back the same but every child is different

If his hair falls out it won't be all of it. I've never seen an infant lose all of it's hair. That's not normal. He may lose it on the sides or back but that's usually from him laying in the same position all the time. I don't mean all day every day but some babies only like to lay a certain way which makes their hair start to thin and/or fall out. Just try to keep him switched up and he should be fine. Also that won't have anything to do with the consistency of his hair. My niece was born with super thick jet black straight here and now has the curliest hair. She's also mixed black and white.
