Is it disrespectful to wear the nation's flags on clothing?

With the 4th of July coming up many stores in the US are featuring flag themed clothing. Everything including hats, jewelry, shirts, dresses and bathing suits. When I see the flag I am reminded of learning how to raise and lower it as well as how to properly fold and store our flag, as part of the 4-H program I was in as a child.

While I am not offended seeing someone wearing clothing with our national flag on it, I would not be comfortable wearing an item of clothing with the actual flag, myself. But something with stars and strips that is red, white and blue with a more abstract pattern I would have no problem wearing.

What are your thoughts on the subject?
