Are Vitamin D drops necessary for exclusively breastfed babies?

My sons doctor has been telling me 9 months that vitamin d drops are needed because hes exclusively breastfed... it doesnt even make sense to me.... do they need the drops? My son is  9 months old now and has done just fine without them...

Yes. they are for exclusively breastfed babies.

Vitamin d helps to absorb calcium an phosphorus and breastmilk doesn't contain it.
Sun exposure should be the only thing that human beings need to achieve the necessary amounts of vitamin d but Take into account that little babies can't be directly exposed to sun and sunscreen prevents skin from making vitamin d. ( and it is absolutely necessary)
Apart from that nowadays we tend to be indoors more than we should and they have found out that most of us have vitamin d deficiency.

My doctor said that 15 minutes of sunlight on baby's forehead once a week handles the vitamin d requirements. We live in the coastal Georgia region so we get lots of days of sunshine. He said if we lived in a rainy or overcast area then he would recommend.

Depends how much sunlight baby gets. If he's not getting enough sunlight and he's really not eating anything but breast milk then yes vitamin d drops are needed

I was told to use them until we started solids. I was sporadic in giving them to my son, but I took vitamin d supplements every day. A certain amount goes into the breastmilk, so if you supplement yourself enough baby will get some.
