41 week induction birth story
I LOVE reading birth stories so I thought I would share my own with my first baby!
I was checked weekly towards the end of my pregnancy and was 3cm dilated by 40 weeks - so that had me very hopeful I would go into labor naturally. Well, finally at 41 weeks with no major contractions yet I was scheduled for an induction. We got up at 4:30 AM to prepare to go to the hospital. I got a call around 5 AM that there was a high number of women already in labor and there were no available beds. So we should wait for a call back. So we waited. And waited. I called back mid-morning, still no beds. We just literally sat around the house all day long waiting. Finally at 6:30pm - (over 13 hours later!) we got the call to come to the hospital.
I was already about 4cm and baby was low. The dr broke my waters and I was started on pitocin. The pitocin suuuuucked. I only walked around for about 30 minutes before contractions were right on top of each other and I couldn't recover so we hit the call button and when the nurse came in, I yelled "I NEED DRUGS!!" Luckily I got the anthesiologist right before he was due to go into a C-section. After the epidural, I felt fantastic. We rested and I labored from 8pm to 4am in peace and quiet. Around 4am I was fully dialated. I pushed for two and a half hours with baby coming down but popping back up every time I stopped pushing. She wasn't fitting down my pelvis. Meanwhile baby's heart rate went up while I spiked a fever. These two symptoms together indicate that baby may have gotten an infection and I was told baby would have to go to the NICU for antibiotics and monitoring. At the 3 hour mark I was prepped for surgery. The c-section was not part of my birth plan!! But it went routinely. No complications. Joslyn Claire was born! I got to kiss her while I was stitched up. My baby girl was taken to the NICU while I recovered. I finally got to see her about 8 hours later. She had an IV in her head and that just broke my heart. But she never developed an infection and left the NICU to join me after 48 hours and she has grown to be a very healthy little girl!
