Why do they tax unemployment???

Thats so unfair. I got laid off at they took off state and federal taxes. What the hell. Im pregnant and needed as much as I can. Upset.

I can see both sides. I can see why it's taxed because it's another form of income, but unemployment actually is an insurance program. I'm under the impression that insurance benefits are not tax eligible.

Because everyone has to pay taxes.  Also if you were truly fired for being pregnant you're about to be a millionaire because that's incredibly illegal and you can sue.

I'm kinda confused by this. So is it that you have to pay tax on a weekly (or monthly or whatever it is) unemployment check?
That doesn't make any sense to me seeing as it's being paid out of government taxes in the first place. I'm confused.

I'm in the same position. Got fired for being pregnant. When I filed for unemployment they asked me if I wanted taxes taken out and I picked yes. With the amount I'm getting I'm only losing $20. That's a 1/2 tank of gas in my car but it makes it easier at the end of the year When I file my taxes. You should try calling them and see if you can change it. I know in my state (Nevada) it's an option to have them taken out or not. Doesn't hurt to ask
