Should "please" be taught as a *magic* word?

Are people obligated to say yes to a request if the person says? Please?

My opinion-please is not a magic word, just good manners. Good manner will get you good manners in return. Not what you want. I feel like this could be a reason why so many men convicted of rape had a problem with no. "Well, I said please." "I asked nicely."

I was taught that "magic word" was synonymous with "manners". People are certainly more willing if the person asking is polite, but never obligated.  I was taught this in preschool and had no problem understanding, so I wouldn't mind if my child learned "magic words". Manners and politeness are very important to my husband and I. We want our children to be very respectful.

I just taught my daughter to use "please" to be polite. She knows she can't get everything and anything if she says please.

Please should be taught, but it should also be understood that people have a right to say no.

My husband and I got sole custody of his 8 year old last year. He had zero manners. We started teaching him to say please and thank you.  I made him ask please when he wanted something.  It quickly turned into "but I said please" when he asked for something and I told him no. So we had to teach him that please was just manners, it was not a "magic" word that meant he was going to get what he was asking for.

I think it's important to teach please as well as other manners but to be clear that saying please doesn't mean you get what you want. For example, if a kid asks another kid "Can I please use that toy," I have always taught that the kid with the toy has the right to say no.

I was never taught please will get you what you're asking for. Just taught its manners n respectful to use our manners and i in turn have taught my kids the same. Just bc u said please doesn't mean you will get your way. People can and will say no.

I'm sure my mum used to say magic word but it was never meant to that you'd get what you wanted because it was magic. Ha totally forgot about that! I'm really hot on manners and will be with my child

Teaching children to be polite doesn't make them rapists. Not giving your children what they want unless they ask nicely teaches them good manners not entitlement. The only way to make a child feel entitled is to give them everything that they ask for, even if it is conditional on good manners.
