We name 450k a year combined and I CHOSE my engagement ring. A 250 bucks black titanium with a fake zirconia little heart shape rock. 
I love the ring and even though I could have let him spend a good 35k on a ring, I saw zero point in it. I remodeled the kitchen instead.  LMAO

I'd rather get the commitment/ring than none at all. Waited 5 years for hubby to propose to me and I was so mad lol. He saved up for a 15k ring when he could have just proposed at 3 years. I didn't care about the ring, although I love showing it off. Because I just wanted anted him to propose so bad I would have taken anything.

It really just depends on who you are. I intend on getting married when my boyfriend and I are in good places financially so I expect a nice ring because we will be able to afford it. But not everyone can afford that or wants it

I don't think so. I care way more about the strength of our marriage. If my husband had chosen to get a cheap ring, I wouldn't have been upset.

However, I would have been upset if he had purchased an inexpensive ring and lied about it.
