Hynobirth?

What exactly is hypnobirthing and what is the benefits? Does it actually help with natural labor?

Answer

I'm SO glad you asked! Hypnobirthing is the technique of using meditation and relaxation techniques (visualization, affirmations, and positive word choice) to aid in a calm, natural birth. I did hypnobirthing so I took the class with my SO and read the book. I did the meditations every day (you listen to a soundtrack-there's different ones)... I picked two favourites I loved the rainbow relaxation and connection one... in my third trimester I listened to the birth visualization a lot to help me prepare for it. I also put up two of my own affirmations by my bed which I said to myself if I was getting anxious or worried. Mine were "I trust my body and my baby" and "I am safe here"... they have ones that you can use but I liked making up my own. They also talk a lot about the power of words during labour so instead of Braxton hicks they called it practice labour, instead of contractions it's wave, instead of pain it's sensation and instead of pushing you breathe baby down.

I did hypnobirthing and I found it allowed me to be very calm. I did early labour as I went through my day, I started having contractions every 10 minutes while out for Chinese food and I just would stop and breathe through them and my SO didn't even know I was in labour :) I was able to lay down and sleep until I was in active labor after my water broke. I had back labour so I was vocalizing but it was in low tones. I was also able to stay calm while transferring to hospital and had a calm, natural birth there (I had more bleeding than they liked). I would really recommend it even whether you're wanting a natural birth, epidural or caesarean. Baby was also very calm and didn't even cry when she came out and continued to be a calm, happy baby. I've heard nothing but good things about it. I read a book on the Mongan method which really changed the way I view birth in general. I feel more confident about my body's ability to have a baby now which I think is one of the most important aspects of the program. I also got a hypnobabies home study course from someone and I'm looking forward to seeing how it affects my birth experience!
