ditching the dummy

Hello. Has anyone experienced ditching the dummy with a 5 month old? My baby has had one since 2 weeks old and relies on it constantly. It was never really as issue until he's gone into his own bedroom-I have to get up about 6 times a night because his dummy has fallen out. My husband has always hated the dummy so obviously he wants to just get rid of them-problem is he works night shifts so wouldn't have to deal with a screaming baby at 4am! Any success stories with taking a dummy away from a young baby or should I wait till he's older???
