Braxton hicks or labor??

How can you tell the difference between Braxton hicks and real labor?? Ftm here thanks

My BH felt the same as early labor. They were persistent and consistent. I went to LD a few times to be checked because they were so regular and strong. The only way I for sure knew I was in labor was when my water broke. I'm hoping this time I'll be able to discern the difference. I have what is called an irritable uterus so I contract a lot.

Braxton hicks are a general tightening or cramping. They shouldn't be painful. They do not open the cervix. They go away when you change activity or hydrate yourself. They're infrequent and do not gain in intensity. True contractions will be painful. They dilate your cervix. They get more frequent and/or stronger with activity. It's possible to feel real contractions but not be in labor, this is called prodromal labor. Prodromal labor may or may not dilate the cervix. Essentially it feels like the real thing, frequency and pain is there and then suddenly it stops. This can happen for days to weeks and is most common at night.

They're the same thing except Braxton hicks aren't in any pattern and doesn't dilate your cervix.
