Can someone explain effaced to me??

So I went to Dr and I'm 40% effaced and I just don't understand what it means😫 like I know it's my cervix thinning but.....can someone explain it a different way? That doesn't mean anything to me, I'm sorry if it sounds dumb, I just don't understand the effaced part when ppl keep saying its the thinning of the cervix....:(

Effacement is your cervix softening and getting shorter and promotes dilation. The percentage of effacement is how short your cervix is and the shorter it becomes the more you'll dilate. As it shortens and you dilate you will loose your mucus plug.

So there is effacing which is thinning of cervix. Dilation is the opening of the cervix, and stations are where the baby is in the vagina. 0 station I believe is like half way, goes like -3,-2,-1,0,+1,+2,+3.

Don't quote me on all of that. I only learned this from preterm labor issues

My doctor explains it as softening. The cervix has to be soft for labor. I have no idea if that helps or not, but that's the description she gave me :)
