Punishment?

Question

What method of punishment do you use for your child(ren)? Please comment why you think it works. If it's not mentioned above also please comment with what works for you. I only know the few ways I mentioned and I only have one child and am looking for some other methods, I would like to stay away from spanking, I personally don't like it. Thank you.

All of the above. The punishment should fit the crime. Start with a firm no. Then a threat of timeout, then timeout. If it keeps up, go to bedroom/ lose the toy. Spanking is the last resort. Each child i different and will respond better to different punishment
 Personally talking and timeouts did nothing. But a spanking or a pop to the hand did. My friend never got popped once as a kid because timeouts worked best.

My mom would grab our hand, smack the top it it, and point a finger at us and tell us we were being bad. It seemed to work 🤷🏼‍♀️ she would also say she was going to call the baby police on us to take us to baby jail, that worked on my youngest brother until he was like 8

Nothing works, he's a terror. He hates being in his room alone though, so we force him in there for time outs. He will not stay in a corner and he thinks spanking is funny. Yelling gets us nowhere. We do threaten to take things away though, like his cars, cartoons, hanging out in our bed before bed, nighttime story, etc. the problem with us is the follow through and that is the most important for punishments (and consistency).

Time outs a minute for every year old they are. Excessive length of time won't be beneficial. Also you are to not interact with them at all during time out.

I do timeout and I use it because it works for me.  I get every kid is different but I was determined and more hard headed than my kid so once she realized I wasn't giving up (I had to keep putting her back in her spot when she was little), she did timeout well. I also taught her to take deep breaths when she's upset before she talked to me.  I feel like spanking is easier and doesn't take as much patience.  I also know my kid behaves better than some kids who are spanked.  Trust me I've wanted to spank at times but I felt if she actually had to sit and think about things or listen to me lecture it would sway her from wanting to act up.  So far my 5.5 year old hasn't been in timeout since who knows when!? This is my opinion and I know everyone has their own way of disciplining. My husband and I just don't do spanking.

My 1st is 8 and nothing worked. She rarely got in trouble but when she did, oh you better watch out. We tried time outs etc but she would just come after you like a spider monkey! I dont believe in spanking. We finally figured out her triggers and learned to talk through the issue with her. It almost always stemmed from her frustrations with a sudden change in activity. To this day, we still tell her days in advance of upcoming events and prep her nightly by saying "when we get home,  its pajamas, books, then bed", for example. Her issues are almost always from no listening. The older shes gotten, the better shes gotten. Any other "troubles" we just used as a teaching moment instead of making it in to a big deal.

Time outs for the little kids, grounding for the big ones. I usually don't have to do much, grounding from screen time for a week usually does the trick. Last December my 6 year old (well 7 now), was so ham one day, that didn't work. I took garbage bags and took every single thing in his room. He had a bed and a dresser, and had to earn everything back. We haven't had to do that again. I don't hit my kids. It didn't work with me, my mom spanked me regularly and I'd laugh at her, so it wasn't a type of discipline that I chose to use on my children.

Read the book "1 2 3 magic". It worked wonders with my wild one. But you have to be consistent and not show emotion. If you get emotional, angry, agitated they know it and will act out more. We put him in his room with the door shut and he's allowed to play until time is up.

I feel like all of them would work but YOU MUST COMMUNICATE with your child(ren). Discipline. What did it do? Why did you do it? What could you have done differently? Explain to them logic and practical thinking of where you are coming from. Why they are being disciplined. And then let them know what will be happening next. This will not only get them on the right track but it'll teach them to communicate with you freely. Even come to you before they make a certain decision. 🤗
