Am I obligated to tell work about my pregnancy?

I'm almost 18 weeks pregnant and I haven't told anyone at work yet including my boss. I want to wait til my next sonogram, around 19-20 weeks, to make sure the baby is okay before telling work I'm pregnant and need maternity leave. Is it weird to wait this long? Im very anxious about it.

I'm almost 17 weeks and have yet to share at work too. I also want to wait until the baby's anatomy scan this month  and/or I can't hide the bump any longer. I personally hate the attention or being treated differently.

You're not obligated to tell them, but as a courtesy it's common to tell employers by 25 weeks so they can make arrangements for your maternity leave. Most HR departments will want at least 1 months notice for any sort of medical leave, but it's best to give them as much notice as possible and let them know sooner rather than later. Most of my employees are aware I'm pregnant (its my 2nd and I started showing early on) but I'm not telling my boss or HR (they're out of state) until after my 4month appointment next week. I'm in management and we need to start planning for someone to sub for me while I'm on leave.

Legally you're not obligated to tell them at all. Waiting until your ultrasound is perfectly fine and if they ask why you waited so long tell them you had personal reasons

I haven't told HR yet. I've told my immediate boss tho. Figured I'd tell HR next month sometime. I'm 17weeks right now.

You will have to tell them at serine point. It's probably better you tell them before baby does.
