He used the expression when he left, I want to fight for him but I'm scared I'll lose, my mom says to give him his space and wait for him to come to me but I miss and love him too much. 
He says he misses me and loves me but he's not coming back right away.

I've been through this. Of course, it's easy to just simply wait for him, but what if he changes his mind and doesn't  want to come back? Then the process of healing will take longer. There may be a possibility that he will come back, but it's best to have the mindset that he may not come back and just set him free. If it is best for him to not be in that relationship, then it's simple as that. If you truly love him, then you will want the best for him, even if it means you don't need to be in the picture.

I've never been in a relationship but.... I say he left, his loss, bye bye.... don't waste your time... if he comes back great talk to him, but if he doesn't move on you deserve to be happy.
