How do you (or do you plan to) handle music in your home?

Vo

Context: my SO and I were watching The Defiant Ones on HBO and started a conversation about how music was handled in our homes. We bother come from conservative backgrounds with varying levels of authoritarian rule.

My parents were really into music 🎶 like my dad was sneaking me into the House of Blues (more like bribing the bouncers to let us in) in junior high, my mom had a reel-to-real in the basement and was always stealing my cassettes or CDs. I grew up doing chores with my mom blasting Prince or Eurythmics. My first CD was Green Day Dookie and some of my favorite music ended up with parental advisory labels on them once that passed.

My SO's mom would edit out bad words or not let them listen to songs at all.

I don't like censorship of art when it is just words, I think they make good learning opportunities and are easy ways of telling your kids what they aren't and are allowed to say. Where other kids giggled at What Child is This (Christmas song) when they mentioned ass and oxen, it didn't phase me because I knew what ass meant in the context.

So how do you or plan to handle this in your home?
