So, my hubby and I rented from a complex last year while he was deployed. I lived alone and we have no kids so the place was literally always clean. We were exceptional tenants, never late on rent and never a bother. Before we left we made sure to clean top to bottom, even a check list. I'm talking from scrubbing baseboards on hands and knees to thoroughly cleaning our refrigerator. You name it, we did it. Our security deposit was 400.00. So rightfully we believed we'd be getting it back. In the state of TN, landlords have 30 days to return a deposit & must include intensive listings of what the money was used for and what reason. We turned our keys in April 16th and paid out the remaining rent until may 1st. So the apartment was left vacant from the 16th until currently. We called At the end of may to have an update on the deposit but were told the checks were cut on the 10th of each month and to call back in June. I called again the week leading up to June 10th, knowing fully that I had surpassed my 30 days by then. Again, call back "it could take between 30-45 days." So we call July 9th and she says the check will be here on the 10th. So today, 7/17/17 I pick the check up. 160.00!!!!! I'm mind blown. So I ask about the specifics and a receipt. They give me the receipt for the cleaning which totaled out to be 240.00. So now I'm livid.  I call the company (whose just a lady who cleans the houses) and figure out why my apartment was so "heavily cleaned". She explained to me that they don't clean until AFTER all the repairs are made (meaning anyone could have left any mess in any room.) mind you, there were no repairs to be made. Not a single dime came from repairs. I was charged for simple things like finger prints on the light switches and spiders in the window seals. Mind you, it is hot as hell in the middle of a Tennessee Summer. I notice that the cleaning receipt wasnt dated until the 12th of July ... meaning they didn't clean the apartment until 5 days ago. So in the nearly 3 months we have been gone, I'm supposed to pay for any cleaning that totaled up to 240.00 when the apartment was, by law, supposed to be cleaned and documented within 30 days. Now I don't know what to do. Whether or not to even pay 150.00 to settle it out in a small claims court or to let these people keep my money and probably so many others........😡😒😠
