Are these real contractions ?

I've been timing them
Last week at 36 weeks I was 2-3 cm dilated 70% effaced. My midwife said she thinks I'll be giving birth around 38 weeks. I'm 37 weeks today, these contractions feel like period cramps and I'm starting to feel it in the back a little bit too but the only thing stopping me from going to the L&D; is I'm not in this terrible pain everyone said I would be in..

They're too inconsistent to go in but if you're worried, call. 
They should be getting closer together, lasting longer, and getting stronger. The general rule is to head to the hospital when they're 5 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute in length, and they've been that way for an hour. 
If they stop or slow down with an activity change or hydration it's not true labor. Prodromal labor mimics true labor and is different from Braxton hicks. You can google prodromal labor to learn more about it.

Well if you were to call your doctor or L&D; to ask they would probably say no because they aren't on consistent timing. But my sister just had a baby last December and almost didn't make it to the hospital in time because she waited so long due to her contractions never becoming irregular. If you can talk through them though, you're probably fine for now until they get stronger

Traditionally women have used the 5-1-1 rule; that is, when contractions come every 5 minutes, each lasting a full minute, and have been that way for an hour. More recent recommendations are 4-1-1 (four minutes apart) or even 3-1-1 (three minutes apart).

They should be consistent and between 40-90 seconds. They should also be increasing in intensity.
