Sex- didn't fit and hurting

So last night I was about to have sex and I'm a virgin, and so it took forever for him to get it in the hole even and then like before he barely went in deep, like I don't even think he got very far, it hurt really bad so I told him to stop. Is it normal for me that he won't fit/it hurt really really bad?
