Did you have an Engagement Party?

Did you have an engagement party? I wasn't planning on it, but now that we're here, Andy and I are having a very low-key picnic. Mostly because his parents are acrimoniously divorced, and my dad has trouble going to restaurants, so we wanted them all to meet at the same time so there was no "he met them first" and my dad could be on home turf. And so this party we didn't want could be cheap. It still feels very selfish to me.

My fiancé and I are doing something very similar. We've been LDR for a very long time and my parents live across the world. So we're having an engagement party where both our families will be meeting for the first time. We will be inviting a few friends as well (our families are very very different and having friends that they both know will help cut tension and level the field, particularly for his family). It's nothing big, it's a dinner at my families cabin and won't cost more than food. It's pretty much like any other get to together at the cabin and will be very low key and very relaxed. We see nothing wrong with it- there's nothing formal about it or rude. No ones bringing presents (unless they decide to on their own which I know some family wants to do), getting formal invitations, etc. Basically it's a family get together like what we hope we can do throughout our marriage.

We had an engagement shower of shorts put on by friends, but it was at our house and just a grill out. Our parents are weird and had never met so they met and met our close friends. Just mingled and wasn't fancy like some of our friends did. To each their own, I think it depends on the situation. Our friends wanted to and our parents needed to meet, plus we had just bought a house to show off and are big fans of parties in general so that's how it went down!

We are planning a sort of engagement party. We lived across the country and had a baby out there and just recently moved back home. So we're having an engagement/housewarming party but it's mostly so my boyfriend's family can meet the baby and so we can see them again and whatnot. I don't really like having parties for myself because it makes me uncomfortable, especially when I don't know the people very well.

I've never been engaged, but I don't think there's a single thing selfish about it. A low key garden party sounds lovely. 💜

We were planning to be engaged for a few years while we saved up money for the wedding so we had a backyard BBQ engagement party to celebrate the new chapter in our lives and share our excitement with friends and family.

We just had a family meal with parents then a close family BBQ with parents, sister, my aunty, uncle and cousins, not a proper party 🙂

I remember my cousin rented a hall and threw a big party.

I think what I'll do is just something lowkey with family and friends at home.
