What's your opinion on Room by Emma Donoghue?

Question

A 5-year-old Jack narrates life inside Room: his whole world but his mother's prison. Reviews seem to be split on this one. It was a NYT Nestseller and won the Best Book Of The Year award. It seems people either loved it or hated it (couldn't connect). What's your take? Do you think the use of a child narrator worked for this book or did you find it tiresome and annoying?

Ummm I am torn between loving it and hating it. Wouldn't read it again if that helps! I found it a bit disturbing from time to time

I couldn't get past the first few chapters. There's a scene where he hides in the closet while their kidnapper rapes his mom and I just couldn't.

I really don't think it would have worked as well with am adult narrating.  I loved the book.  the movie was so so.

When I first borrowed the book I got the audio and I just couldn't after like 20 minutes.  It is literally hours of listening to a 5 year old! However, I then tried an ebook and really liked it  (as much as you can enjoy reading a book like this).  So I definitely recommend reading it over listening.
