African-Americans appropriating Caribbean culture
I'm personally tired of artists (not gonna name names but there are a few) who are black Americans using the West Indies in music videos for their benefit since it's the culture they use to increase their own revenue.
True artists like Popcaan and Rihanna have done incredibly well to make such a huge impact globally, but black American artists have started to jump on the wagon of using these influences for their own personal benefit or because it's trendy. No one saw an issue of Snoop Dogg becoming Snoop Lion, but he lost his Rastafarian name and was denounced because he offended them by not understanding the culture fully. To give him credit, he did try.
It's easy to feature Popcaan, Rihanna, either of the Marley brothers, reworking Tanya Stephens music or other reggae and calypsonian artists, but are they really doing those artists justice?
I see numerous white people being called out for appropriating other cultures, but I don't think anyone realises that black Americans are not the same as black West Indians (or even white West Indians) and do not share the hardships or culture.
As a West Indian when I use slang or speak creole, I've had black Brits tell me I'm appropriating their culture. I ask them where the word stems from or what it means and they're unable to tell me. It's because it's my culture. I know what I'm saying. Because you share the same skin colour doesn't mean you share the culture.
Does anyone else agree? As someone born in the Caribbean and grew up there for 3/4 of my life, I'm frustrated. My culture is being appropriated and no one sees it.
Do you think this is cultural appropriation or not?
