What is going on?!?

I was put on birth control at 16 due to irregular periods. Once I was on birth control, I got my period every month. Any time I get my period I get cramps and brown spotting the day before. Then it's heavy the first few days and slows down the rest. I went off bc to TTC. Month one my period came and was like it always was. This month its been weird. I got the brown spotting but no cramps. That night before bed ot was red when I wiped so I put a pad on assuming AF was coming. Next morning it was brown again. It keeps bouncing back and forth between brown and red. But it is only when I wipe. Never on my pad. What is going on?
