Covers on newborn necessary?

Question

A friend of mine claimed she never used covers on her newborn, just the prefolds and the few fitted she owns. Once her children were out of the fitted she put on covers (like 10-12lbs). 
Did anyone else not use covers on their newborn?

I found that if your breastfeeding or pumping the best thing is a cover.  I used a fitted diaper on my baby and had a major blow out in public

As long as your continuously checking baby, you can get away without a cover. Especially with a fitted, depending on the diaper it self though as not all fitteds are created equal. I would have covers anyways, to make life easier.

I dont want to take any risk of leaking. So I bought 10 newborn-size covers for my 1st born. They will be used by my 2nd born :)

okay since the last time I commented I have done this I double them up and I put a Snappy on he does pee through them but you just have to change more frequently but it's kind of nice because I have to babies and my extra covers are always upstairs so he goes without a cover until I'm able to go upstairs and get a new one

I think you would get a lot of solid laundry without the cover
