Metformin and spotting

I started Metformin on Monday night. I do get periods albeit irregular. A normal cycle for me generally means ovulation on CD18-20. Today (CD15), I had a tiny bit of spotting when I wiped. I've literally never spotted in the middle of a cycle. Could it be the metformin? Would it make sense that I spot BEFORE ovulation? I haven't gotten a positive opk yet.
