Help!

My friend and I have known each other since kinder. We went to different schools sixth through eighth grade. We're going into high school this year, and idk how to tell him I like him.... we already don't see each other often so I have no idea how this'll go over. I can tell he likes me back, but... we're other really awkward around each other now and I have the feeling we're each waiting for the other to make the first move. He could be coming to my high school in tenth, but if he doesn't we'll be farther away than ever... ☹️ what should I do?
