Who can prescribe antidepressants?

I don't have time to go to a psychiatrist or therapist due to working out of state, kids, school, etc. I struggle with depression and anxiety. My mom told me only they can prescribe antidepressants or anxiety medication. Does anyone know if just a family doctor can, or what? I don't have insurance so I don't want to pay to go if they can't prescribe it

I usually see a nurse practitioner and she sent in a prescription for me for anxiety.

You see a primary doctor first and then they go from there. In my case, only my primary doctor to prescribe and my psychologist would refer me to get a specific one. But I've also had to go to a psychologist to get a prescription in a different state. So I think it depends on your state and insurance

It depends. Usually a GP can prescribe them, but if you were to need something more controlled (as in a stronger dose) then there can be restrictions. Where you live does play a role in this too- some places require a psychiatrist to do an evaluation first before those kinds of drugs can be prescribed. It just depends on where you live and what your medical association requires.
