Do you have to have some kind of relationship with your S/O's mother for the relationship to work between the two of you (assuming she is in his life)

Generally, no. But if his mother is super involved and he's a big ol momma's boy, it could pose some challenges for the relationship for sure. He could feel like he has to choose between you and her and if his heart isn't with you, that's a problem imo. And you'll likely find it to be a problem too.

In regards to my step MIL,  I'm only ever really just cordial with her. We don't talk outside of family functions, and barely say more than a sentence to her there. She's a cold, selfish person, so I don't waste my time (same can be said for my father in law, actually). My MIL is an angel and very personal, emotional, and involved. We text and call on occasion, but we absolutely get along and I genuinely love her. She's a great lady. I believe in setting boundaries and she believes in enforcing them.

I'm very close with my inlawas and feel very lucky to have them around I know not all are the same but I definitely feel like I hit the jackpot with my mil at least me and my FIL don't always see eye to eye

I'm very close to my mil and fil. They have been so helpful and they took me in and treated me like no other. 
So yeah I think you do obviously as long as you are treated properly and respectfully

No you don't, but from personal experience and now watching it happen to a sibling.... if your family doesn't like your partner, it can cause huge issues in your relationship. Even if both sides are faking pleasantness. Just because family likes to give opinions on every little thing and will use anything you say to them against you. Eventually after months and years of hearing negative opinions about your partner, it wears you down and you take on those thoughts. Resentment settles in. Blah blah. It's a thing.

Agreed with the other person. If hes a mommas boy it could be a big deal.. I know my boyfriends mom wants to know her baby is happy, and she always tells me if he takes care of you the way I raised him, please take care of him. Plus its always good to have moms support.
