What is an atheist?

Stupid question I know, but I'm not actually sure. Does it mean you don't believe in religion, or does it mean you don't believe in any other life out of earth (so they don't believe in aliens or anything). Also can atheists believe in after life or not?

An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in any God or religion. I'm atheist and believe in aliens and the afterlife, just not heaven or hell.

Atheism is the opposite of belief in any type of God or religion/religious deity. They do not believe in an after life. 
Agnostics believe you can't know if there is a God/after life...etc 
Sometimes the two can get confused with each other.

Atheists don't believe in a god and don't have a religion, so they don't believe in heaven or hell and any other religious equivalent. Each atheist may think something different about afterlife, but being atheist has nothing to do with believing in aliens
