Doesn't like books?

My son is about to turn 1 and he used to loooove sitting with us while we read books to him. I sing sometimes, my SO does funny voices, we had a good time. But recently he doesn't like to be read to anymore. He likes his books still, he pulls them off the shelf all the time and gets excited when we ask if he wants to read a book, but when we actually sit down with a book he doesn't want to listen to us he just wants to play with the book (eat it, flip the pages, feel the interactive stuff) he has no patience for the words. My SO is very worried this means he won't ever want to read books with us again. It feels like a phase to me but idk this is my first, so I ask--do other kids do this? Is it a phase? Or is my kid just destined to never enjoy reading?
