If one partner you works and the other doesn’t...

If one partner works and the other doesn’t, is the partner with a “job” released of all extra chores and responsibilities when they get home?

Example:

If John goes to work 8 hours a day and Mary stays home with their two kids. Mary gets up with John to make him breakfast, takes care of kids, cooks for the kids, cleans up, bathes them, runs errands, buys groceries, puts them down for naps, etc- when John gets home should he be helping with dinner, cleaning up and bed time or does Mary have to keep working until everyone is in bed? What about weekends? Does John not have to help because he works? When he “Mary’s” time off?
