Is a bassinet necessary?

hi! FTM, and I'm seeing every where to get a bassinet for the baby to sleep in, in our room as a newborn.  We have small bedrooms and the crib in the baby's room will only be another 4' further away than if in a bassinet in our room.  So I wasn't planning on getting one. One less thing to buy, take up space, etc. We have a pack'n'play but there's not enough space in our bedroom to use that in our room.  We also have a portable swing like the one in this photo. I read that some parents used a swing or rock'n'play for their newborns to sleep in overnight. Are those safe to use for overnight sleeping? Any pros & cons? I'm due in almost 3 weeks and starting to panic myself with the inconsistent info I keep finding lol thanks in advance for any help!

I wouldn't recommend baby sleeps in swing, rock n play or anything else that positions their chin to chest. It can cut off their airway and cause asphyxiation.. at least according to a ton of things I've read.

No, you don't need one. A babycan safely sleep in anything flat with little padding and nothing to get in their airways. A drawer or laundry basket can be just as safe as a bassinet.

my pediatrician actually told me to get a rock n play for overnight sleeping because my baby wouldn't sleep flat.it was a life saver.

I wouldn't recommend a swing to sleep in they get too used to the position and it can affect their backs and necks too. It's like them sleeping in a carseat nit safe or comfortable for them for long periods. . A bassinet is handy to have when they are little so they can be close to you to keep an eye on in the first few months. plus you can put it in living room or anywhere else you need to during the day. Don't let your baby sleep in a swing. Higher risk for SIDS. Also my son wiggles his way out of his swing and fell face first in the middle of the night on the ground. Scared me to death. He was okay but I felt awful. Bassinet or crib is a great thing for a baby to sleep in

I Got one since I'm a FTM too. I feel like it'll help me adjust before putting my baby in its bed. If I'm sore I don't have to get up far. We shall find out.

We didn't get a bassinet. My son slept in his crib every night since we brought him home. We had a monitor to watch him. We all slept great and never needed to transition him. He has slept 13 hours straight since 6 months

Thanks all! I was thinking it was a case of opinion, convenience, and how each baby sleeps individually. But I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some safety or health risks for one option or another.

A  bassinet is good for people like me that my baby's room is on a different floor.  My room is upstairs and baby's room is on the main floor. So we have a pack n play with a bassinet on top and a swing.  My baby loves his swing.

Is a bassinet necessary?
