Ibuprofen(Nurofen) was my best friend and go to. Only thing is if you have moderate to severe asthma I'd say it's a no go. 
I have mild asthma and it messes it up a bit but my friend has severe asthma and can't take it

I shift between Midol and Ibuprofen. I take midol, then two hours later I take ibuprofen. My periods are awful.

Try to take the meds when you start feeling cramping coming! That way the meds will have time to work. Normally pills take 15-20 minutes to start working (depending on the med). My cramps are horrible too.

Only thing that works for me is aleve. Motrin makes me throw up and the rest just don't do anything
