Would you defend someone from a physical attack even if they blatantly had different beliefs than you? (Hypothetical)

For example:

*An indian man from India lives in a village where 90% of the population is Hindu. It became known to an extreme Hindu group that the man was a Christan and they began harassing him and his family verbally and physically. Then one of his Hindu neighbors attack him with a bike chain while onlookers passed by. Then the group drags him out of his house and takes him to a police station where they beat him. Then they put an order in the village saying that no one is to interact with him or his family or they will be punished or fined. Not one person helps or defends them while they are under constant attacks.
