What to count as 1st day of af?

So af arrived today 😧.  I had brown spotting yesterday all day and around 10 pm I had bright red about a half teaspoon come out. I pup on a panty liner and checked a few minites earlier  to see a bit of brown. Then nothing else. This morning I'm having a flow. Do I count yesterday or today the first day of af?

I've had a similar thing happen and it was important to determine the first day of my period because I was doing fertility treatments. I asked my doctor and she said it's the first day of full flow. Based on that, I would say today.

Today :) I asked my doctor about this. He said the first day counts when you need to use a pad or tampon.

I've heard red flow is when it counts. Not sure in this situation though! 😕
