Baby shower

My mother is throwing me and my sister a joint baby shower. Her due date is a few weeks after mine. So she will be 8 months when we do it but I will be 38 weeks is this too late for a baby shower? My mom kindly asked me to not buy anything for my baby myself until after the baby shower bc I don't know what I will get but I feel like I'm having the shower a little late and I need to get things asap. She also said not to buy a stroller or car seat bc that will be her gift to me but she always complains about not having money and me and my husband just say we will buy everything and she gets upset I love my my mom to death and wanna respect her doing things for me but how do I tell her no without upsetting her? We can't depend on her for our child's things if she really can't afford it which I completely understand
