Mental Illness

I have bipolar disorder. I'm pretty open about my experience. In my case it's mostly extreme depression with suicidal ideation and impulse control issues (part of the reason I love a good troll fight haha). My psych evaluation has me listed as 'highly intelligent, compassionate and a good mother.' In the last two weeks on Glow I've been told that I better stay on my meds so I don't snap on my kid, and today, that I'm a lot of things including bipolar so they wouldn't expect me to understand. So here's my question. When someone is open about a mental illness, do you think that immediately makes them an unstable crazy person who can't possibly relate to anything a 'normal' person goes through?
