One nap too early?

Martha • Mom of two incredible little boys!

My kiddo is a great sleeper and has been on a daily routine since he was two weeks old (obviously that routine has changed with his age). He's been sleeping through the night since he was 7 weeks old minus the occasional bad night of teething or jet lag from traveling. For the longest time he's been doing a nap between 10-11 and then a second nap in the evening. As of late though he just will not go down for his first nap and is super cranky in the evening. Our pediatrician said most babies aren't ready to go down for one nap without being cranky and overtired before 15 months. But I have been laying him down in his crib at nap time for the last three days and he plays in his crib for HOURS. No crying or fussing. I lay him down and he plays and plays and plays. I tried taking toys out of his crib but that won't work. He'll play with his hands, his clothing (he's learning to take his pants and diaper off in the crib so I lay him down in just a onesie), and even play with the crib (smacking it, poking it, etc.). I feel horrible because for the past three days I've let my son lay in his crib for 2-4 hours. Like I said, he's not crying or fussing. Just refusing to nap. I keep thinking "oh, he's going to fall asleep anytime now." But nope, hour after hour passes by. After a while I go get him to give him lunch. Then he goes down for an evening nap later in the day and goes to bed an hour earlier than usual but is just DONE before bed. Dinner time and bath time has become a nightmare because he's just so tired. I don't get it... is he ready to go to one nap, is this just a phase, or are we just struggling to get him to nap? Any advice? Anyone else going through this? I'm so not ready to give up that second nap! Lol
