Cutting holes in the tips of pacifiers?

I've seen photos of people doing it on Facebook. I think it's supposed to be in case it comes apart and it gets swallowed. 
Is it worth doing? Have any of you done it? Pros/Cons

DO NOT CUT PACIFIERS they are made to be safe for your baby. you'll introduce somewhere for bacteria to hide. baby will suck in air if its the open kind like a soothie. You don't cut them when they are ready to wean as they could ingest pieces or cut their mouths. cutting a pacifier is a bad idea all around

I didn't do it simply because I didn't know it was a thing? Makes sense I suppose but makes me feel like it would be an easy place for bacteria to get trapped and it wouldn't be easy to clean out. I used the pacifiers that were all one piece but I know some babies don't take to them very well.

I've only heard of people cutting the pacifiers to break babies of using them. They cut a little at a time, until there's really nothing left for baby to suck on.

Nope, just buy the avent soothie. It's one piece. Doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

I personally don't think it's safe. I took away the paci cold turkey w both my kids just over age one and it worked fine for both kids.
