Birth Story

Justine

I don't really know how to start this or talk about it but I guess I will start with my 38 week check up.

I went in to see my midwife on Thursday September 21st and they took my vitals as usual. I had gained 8 lbs in 5 days and My blood pressure was unusually high as well as my heart rate so she was a bit concerned. We went about our appointment talking about birth plans etc. she decided to take my blood pressure again and it was even higher so she called and OB to get an opinion and came back and said she was going to induce me either that day or the next day but they were concerned I was getting preeclampsia. So my husband and I went home and prepared to go into the hospital that night just in case. Well we ended up having to wait until Friday because L&D; was full. Fast forward to Friday we went to the hospital at 5pm to start the admissions and everything, got settled into our room and waited for my midwife. Around 7 pm she came in and inserted a balloon into my cervix to get it to ripen and dilate to at least a 3. The next 8 hours were torturous. From 7:45 to 3:30 I had actual transitioning pain. My contractions were 1-2 minutes apart lasting 1-1 1/2 minutes long and sometimes they were on top of each other. No position helped the pain, I wanted to throw up and pass out with each contraction. I wasn't allowed any pain meds because the balloon was only suppose to bring me to 3-4 cm maybe. So if I got pain meds that early it most likely wouldn't work when i may need it more later on. At 3:30 I finally got out of the labor tub and caved in and asked for fentenol so I could sleep until my midwife came back at 7 to take the balloon out. Thankfully it worked and I had instant relief. She didn't come in until 7:50 and by then the pain meds wore off so I was starting to feel everything again. She went to get the balloon and to our surprise I was dilated to 7 cm and 90% effaced. So next step was epidural then pitocin to help contractions pick up on their own. I got the epidural at noon and seriously it was amazing. At about 230 pm they checked my cervix and i was Still at a 7 and 90% effaced at -1 stage but my water bag was bulging so she decided to break my water and we waited for about 2 hours to see if my contractions would pick up. At 5pm they rechecked me and I was now between a 7-8 just barely at an 8 still 90% effaced and -1 stage. So we turned on the pitocin to see if that would help, well around 7:30pm they told me baby's heart rate was plummeting and we had to shut the pitocin off because he didn't like it. Baby's heart rate went back to normal and around 9:45 we started pitocin again just to see what would happen, if it would have a better outcome this time. At 10 they came back in saying baby's heart rate was way too out of control and he was going as high as 180 and plummeting as low as 80 bpm really fast. He was in distress. The on call doctor and my midwife decided a c section was necessary and there was no more waiting it out to see if things would change. I got all OR ready. Crying hysterically because this was not what I wanted and I was scared for my son and scared to go into major surgery. I received SO MUCH medication in such a short amount of time it made me shake uncontrollably they had to strap my arms down. Baby was born at 11:29 pm on September 23rd 6lbs 7.5 ounces! Perfectly healthy!

Apparently my pelvis is way to narrow for any baby to pass through unless he/she was 3lbs or less. So we now have to consider that for every future pregnancy I have to have a c section. Crushed my dreams of ever having a normal birth but my son is happy and healthy and that's what matters the most at this point in time!
