Is it okay to send your ex-doctor a friend request on Facebook? They helped massively with my mental health kinda sad there gone :(

I'm in a health care profession and I don't accept any friend requests from old or current patients, and find it a little awkward when they do try to add me. My facebook is for those I talk to regularly and those who have deeper connections into my past, such as my extended family, old room mates, closer ex coworkers, ect. While I may form closer connections with some of my patients, I feel that it crosses professional boundaries to accept them into my personal life.

I said no, because I'm a nurse, and from my experience everything nurses and doctors do for their patients is their job. We try to not get emotionally involved and I personally would not accept any of my patients as Facebook friends because that is my personal life and wouldn't want to share. I can't really say for your doctor, this is just my opinion

I have a doctor I became really close wit on Facebook. She moved practise and she likes to see how far I’ve come along. I think it really depends on the doctor and the relationship you have with them. Some doctors are really friendly with their patients and some totally keep it separate from their private life. You can add him, if he doesn’t want to add you he won’t. Don’t take it hard though, he might not recognize you or your name, or he just might not want patients on his facebook. Social media is so new in relativity, that we still don’t know what is and isn’t fully acceptable.
