The earliest tests can't test until 6 days before your missed period, and even then they often can give false negatives. I'd personally wait until a day or two before your missed period. As far as the timing of pregnancy goes, it takes 5-10 days after ovulation for the fertilized egg to implant, and only then does your body take note and start producing hcg, which is what pregnancy tests look for. So many women will still test negative 6 days before their period because the egg hasn't implanted yet or just has and their body hasn't produced enough hcg yet to hit the threshold needed to get a positive test.
