Miscarriage at 17 weeks (Pictures)- Update

Courtney • Wife and mama

Early Sunday morning 9-24-17 at 17 weeks, we lost our beautiful baby boy, Elliott Matthew. He weighed 4.9 ounces and 6.89 inches long. He was so incredibly perfect ❤️ I am so heart broken. I feel like a part of me is missing. I just want my baby back.

UPDATE- cause of miscarriage

So when your pregnant the placenta forms and the umbilical cord like inserts into it, and typically it inserts right into the middle, but Elliott’s inserted into the side. Which isn’t really a huge problem, except a substance called wharton's jelly typically forms over the baby’s blood veins that extend into the placenta, but for Elliott the jelly never formed. So his blood veins were unprotected and one of them detached and so when I was having bleeding and spotting it was his blood that I was losing a week before I miscarried. And due to there being blood in my uterus, it became irritated, causing contractions. It’s almost impossible to identify through ultrasound, and even if they had seen it, they couldn’t do anything about it. He said some babies with it go on to be born without a vein rupturing but then some die midway through pregnancy like Elliott. And they can die later on in pregnancy because of it too. So if it hadn’t happened now it could have happened anytime in my pregnancy. They said it’s super rare. They get a case maybe every five years. But this does mean that it’s very likely I’ll continue on to have successful pregnancy’s after this and it would be shocking if I had this happen again.
