Periods and birth control

Hello! I have never been on birth control and I am nearing the end of my very first pill pack. I was supposed to start my period three days ago, but really only have red/brown discharge when I go to the bathroom. Normally I am the kind of girl that bleeds so heavy that I have to wear a super tampon and a night time super pad at the same time all day. Is it normal to have such a drastic change in period so soon? My doctor and I were planning on using the pills to end my periods all together, but didn't think it would happen for a few months.
