When do you plan on switching to a toddler bed?

I commented this on another post but I tried letting my son sleep in a twin size bed when we stayed at my dad’s over Hurricane Irma. Well within an hour of being asleep he launched himself off the side of the bed and on to the floor. He is just such a restless sleeper and I can see him all night long on the baby monitor bouncing around the crib from corner to corner. If he is not trying to climb out of his crib, only sleeps in it and is not being harmed by it, I am in no rush.

We're having our second baby right after our first turns two. I think we may get her a toddler bed soon after her birthday and ideally have her in it by the time the new baby needs the crib. I would prefer not to have 2 cribs for only a couple of months at most.

I think I'll switch him over about 2 or when he learns to climb out. He sleeps on a cot without sides at daycare so i think he'll transition just fine

For those who have already transitioned, how do you keep them from playing with all of their toys instead of sleeping? How do you keep them in their room? I feel like I'd find my little guy downstairs in the pantry eating teddy grahams at 2am.

My son will be turning 2 right after our newest is born so we plan to transition him to a toddler bed around then so baby can have his crib instead of buying another. It makes me so nervous because his crib is the only place I can keep him contained and I imagine him being the child that wakes through the night and getting into stuff.

We had it set up for a while but she was still sleeping in our room in a pack and play. 
I tried transitioning her to it during the summer but it didn’t work out. She cried and screamed and wouldn’t sleep. So I only tried a couple of nights and then gave up. 
Fast forward a couple of months and I had to take a trip for work. My husband tried putting her in her own room instead and she went down without much fuss. She was sad (some sniffles while falling asleep) about it for a while though and I would stay in her room and rub her back a bit or come back to comfort her if she woke up. 
Now she goes down easily in her room and it isn’t a problem!  She stays in bed until the morning. We have a child lock on her door called a monkey bar so she can’t wander around the house.

Started two nights ago at 17 months. 2 nights she's gone to sleep happily and slept through the night. She was normally waking at least once in her cot so I'm crossing fingers this lasts!

My daughter has been in her own room since she was about 13-14 months old. She’s in her own twin bed with two bedrails. The best thing I ever did! She’s 18 months btw

I just started switching my son to a toddler bed. He is 18 months. First night was a nightmare. Second night wasn’t to bad. He slept in his bed for most of the night. Moved to the floor during some time. And at about 5am came and laid in my room and went to sleep.
