Is smoking cigarettes considered a sin?

Cigarettes are harmful to your body. The Lord calls us to take care of our bodies since it is His temple (if we are Christians). So things that are harmful to your body should not be used. That is why we should also exercise and eat healthy. It's not legalistic though so the Lord gives grace and guides individuals specifically. However some things are more destructive than others. Cigarettes are also addicting and addictions control us in certain ways (we have to step out to smoke every so often, etc.). When something else controls us it is also not a good thing. We want to be honoring God always and not have to be dictated by anything else. I hope this makes sense.

In my opinion, smoking cigarettes is sinful because God tells us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, shouldn’t we do everything possible to take care of our bodies rather than harming them with cigarettes?

This is such a gray area...but in these situations its easiest to figure it out by asking yourself things like "does it please God?", "does it give the appearance of sin?" (which is a sin if we know it does), "Would my doing this bring people to or from Christ?"

In Romans 6:16 says “ Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey, either of sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness?”. So when someone becomes addicted to smoking they become slaves to it, and we shouldn’t allow that.

2 Corinthians 7:1 says that we should 'cleanse ourselves of every defilement of flesh and spirit.'
there is ample evidence that smoking is bad for our bodies so it could definitely be considered a defilement to the flesh

I’de probably say yes because it is an addiction and addictions lead to idolatry in the way that you put that first in many ways. To be so addicted to cigarettes is not good because we are to only be so close to one thing (person) and also keep that one thing first and at that high of a level and that is Christ. Not cigarettes. Even if it’s just an occasional smoke. Anything that has the potential of becoming an addiction is “no bueno”. Pray to God about it and ask him to remove cigarettes, or any other bad and addictive habit, out of your life.
