In-law holiday issues with a newborn

Sarah • Wife and mother of a baby boy 💙

I live in Hawaii. There’s family on three islands (one of which is the one my husband and I live on, Big Island/Island of Hawai’i). It’s a 30-45 ish min flight to each island depending on where you are and which you’re going to.

So I had a flight leftover from last year I couldn’t use since I was sick. I was able to use as something else so long as I had booked by Sept. 4th.

Christmas we were planning to go see my parents on Oahu then my husband’s family on Maui then back home to Big Island. Simple plan? Apparently not.

Since I had to book the two flights I had credit for early on, my husband and I asked my father in law repeatedly when the yearly Christmas party of his family was. He assured us the 25th evening. While I wasn’t happy with having to fly on Christmas Day I complied. My flight to Oahu and from Oahu to Maui was therefore bought.

My father in law said he would pay for mine and my husband’s flight to and from Maui. He never got back to us so we contact him today and he is now saying the party is the 23rd and that he told us this (this man and the step mother are hardly a part of his sons lives so no he did not).

It would cost over $600 to change the flights plus cannot change a flight credit and that is too many flights back and forth with a newborn consecutively for my liking.

We told him of what we have paid for already and asked if just a holiday visit on Christmas evening and the day after would be alright.

We are being ignored, so you know what? I’m not gonna stress it. Looks like hubby, baby, and I are gonna have a mini family vacation on our own on Maui as our Christmas present to each other! 😂
