I've heard mixed things about putting cereal in bottles. My baby is 6 weeks old- is it safe to put cereal in his bottles? Please comment with any other info or advice!

my son is 9 weeks today. has bad reflux that had us in the ER twice when he was 7 weeks. all ER docs and our pediatrician said he can start rice cereal to thicken the breast milk. i asked them i thought babies shouldnt have it until 4 months.. pediatrician said 6 weeks is the bare minimum but they prefer 4 months. also my siblings, nieces, nephews and myself were given rice cereal at 8 weeks.. no problem. my son digested it well too

We been putting it in my son's cereal for a month now. He doesn't eat every hour now (like he used to) and he doesn't spit up as much. He's almost 3 months old now.

At 2 weeks my Dr gave us the ok to add cereal to his bottle to thicken his milk and lessen his spit up. We never did it but there seems to be a wide age range based on different doctors and the overall health of the child. Each baby is an individual, ask your Dr.

From what I've read, it is suggested not to start them on cereal before 4 months (unless a doctor advises you to for reflux) because it is a choking hazard. Prior to about 4 months their little tongues only really have the reflex to push out, so they aren't ready to swallow thick substances yet. Therefore they can choke very easily. I was about to start my 8 week old on rice cereal since he always seems hungry, but then I read that and thought I should probably wait. Or get the okay from the doctor first.
