Background: I've been on birth control for the past 10 years. I've done everything except IUDs (pills, rings, implant). I have always had severe periods. Birth Control has always made it worse. Today on my new pills I've spit out 12 giant clots. I've seen doctor after doctor. My diagnosis is "unlucky". I've always been afraid of IUDs because sticking anything in my uterus doesn't seem safe. How has everyone liked them? How were your periods when you had the IUD in?

I’ve never had one but my two best friends have them and love them. Both copper no hormones. One gf has heavier periods with the iud and she has actually pulled hers out twice! But she still prefers it over any other birth control. My other gf has had no issues. You’ll hear horror stories too. Years ago my mom had to have surgery to get hers removed after getting lodged in her, but this is less common, but non the less is a risk

I hate mine, I got the copper IUD (paraguard). It has no hormones and it can make your periods much heavier. Mine were light on the pill.. with the IUD they are insanely heavy. So bad I got back on the pill 5m later with the IUD in bc I couldn’t handle the flow (I’m talking changing super plus tampons every 30mins). Your circumstances are different, the only reason I got the iud was bc I was breastfeeding and it doesn’t affect your supply. I honestly want my taken out, on top of the heavy flow I get my period every 14 days.

None of this is natural and so that’s why we get horror stories all the time! I’m sorry, my paraguard story isn’t the best either :/ I had high hopes but the cramps got the best of me. Flow was the same, but I had pain all weeks of the month, except maybe three or four days of rest. Everybody said that is to be expected, but no woman should feel so awful! Anyway, sex wasn’t comfortable either. My partner felt the strings even when they were cut, and he could never go in all the way be wise it hurt me. I was always paranoid about the iud popping out of my uterus 😔 I also got PID within 3 days of having it inserted. Doctors didnt know, and I had to go to the ER the next day -.- you can be more prone to infection, and the smell down there becomes weird.. like metallic? Just gross and unnatural. No matter what you eat. Raw vegan here.

I have a hormonal iud and so far I love it! I've lost weight since I've gotten it, spotting and cramping has already gone away. And it hasn't fallen out or punctured my uterus like everyone claims is 'highly likely'. It's worth a shot. If it gives you problems then you can switch to another birth control. If you have really bad periods then mirena is probably going to be the best one for you

I was always hesitant to get an IUD but after having 2 kids, an IUD seems like such a minor thing. After my second was born, i got the Paragard (nonhormonal, 10 year) IUD. Im going on 6 months with it and so far so good. We dont use any backup, the IUD is our only bv and so far no more babies. I do check it monthly but thats the only time im aware that its there. I have had a couple irregularities but its hard to say if Breastfeeding or the IUD have caused them. Overall, im very happy with it and would definitely recommend it. 
Insertion was quick and painless (only slight discomfort). I have a friends who has the skyla and has never been pregnant. She said, insertion was painful for her but not unbearable
